I'm working on Mike Seniors book and the chapter on side chains confused me a little. On page 219 where it says you should compress a guitar track by using the vocal track's signal. I was able to test this out in protools but I don't know how this works in reaper. On page 220 where it says that you can use a sidechain to get rid of snare spill on the hi hat track. Do I use a gate for this?
It should work with pretty much all FX that has a sidechain-button. It could be called something else of course..."external" or something similar. On The Glue its the "ext in" button.

Side chaining is great for ducking the bass with the kick too. It helps to give each its own space. If you're trying to get rid of the snare noise through the hats, you could also use ReaGate, play with the LP & HP until you get some Hi Hat isolation. What you could try is going extreme & then bringing the Dry mix up until it sounds more natural.
